Our History
The very first building at The Volcano Inn started out as a humble sailor’s shack, hand-built right here in the heart of the lush Hawaiian rainforest. That sailor quickly realized he had a gift for design and construction, and what began as a simple shelter slowly grew into something much more.
Since the 1980s, The Volcano Inn has stood as a reflection of thoughtful craftsmanship, surrounded by the beauty and peace of the rainforest.
Of course, the story has had its twists and turns—some heartbreaking, others uplifting. The original owner went through heavy times, even had his life’s work taken from him… but with the help of good friends and plenty of grit, he took it back.
These days, he’s enjoying a quiet retirement somewhere off the map, but The Volcano Inn lives on—still welcoming travelers with the same warmth, heart, and aloha spirit it was built on.
In Modern Times
Welcoming around 10,000 travelers each year, we’ve helped shift what folks expect from a trip to Hawai‘i. It’s not all beaches and umbrella drinks—there’s a deeper kind of beauty here, and we love sharing it.
As a locally owned, family-run spot in the rainforest, we’re always working to grow, improve, and keep things true to the spirit of aloha. When you stay with us, you’re not getting that store-bought version—you’re getting the kind that comes from the heart.
